Met Office Forecasts a High Performing Digital Experience

With over 300 million annual page views, the UK’s national weather service required a system that had excellent performance and was scalable at peak traffic, such as severe weather conditions and periods of increased travel. The Met Office selected the Hippo platform for its scalability, as well as its ability to integrate all backend systems easily. These powerful features allow the Met Office to provide the most reliable localized weather information that keeps airlines flying safely and on-time, is a vital influence on military operations, and allows the general public to plan, prepare for, and enjoy their day to the fullest.

“We wanted a DX platform that would work with our agile approach to technology development.” stated Owen Tribe, Head of Digital at the Met Office, “Hippo has a highly scalable capacity, and can integrate with our complex systems, it also allowed our teams at the Met Office to have autonomy over release changes. We fully expect that the new system will enable us to make huge efficiencies and cost savings over time. It has been really great working with the team at Hippo, they have a really collaborative approach to the project and worked closely with our teams here at our HQ.”

In their more than 160 years as a major provider of weather and climate information, the Met Office has embraced multiple advancements in the technology used both to collect and disperse information and implementing a system that not only supports today’s digital needs but can easily adapt to future technologies is paramount.

“The Met Office has evolved with technologies for over a century, and this drive to continuously innovate is exactly why the Hippo platform is a good match for their organization” says Arjé Cahn, CTO and co-founder of Hippo. “Hippo has always been future-focused: the platform is built on a flexible, API-driven architecture with integrations and rapid development as core pillars, allowing forward-thinking businesses to continuously push the boundaries of digital experiences. The Met Office is a great example of a business that is striving to use digital to its full advantage. The Hippo platform provides them with the agility to innovate and integrate with future technologies at speeds that will keep them well ahead of the digital curve.”
