He called&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2001\/06\/02\/ballmer_linux_is_a_cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux a cancer&nbsp;<\/a>and argued, essentially, that anybody who used open source resources was putting their business at risk. He even went as far as to urge the government not to support open source projects.<\/p>\n<p>From Microsoft\u2019s point of view, it was an understandable position. After all, its dominance of the industry was dependent on protecting its intellectual property. Yet a decade later, it&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/03\/13\/kinext_code_open_sourced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open sourced Kinect<\/a>, one of it\u2019s most popular products ever.
