Starting in January 2027, new UK rules for consumer subscriptions under the DMCCA come into force, which is earlier than the spring 2027 date first expected.

The rules are aimed at “subscription traps.” They apply to consumer contracts that renew automatically and create further payments, including free or discounted trials that turn into paid plans (though B2B subscriptions are not covered). The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) enforces the rules and can fine businesses up to 10% of global annual turnover.

What’s Changing With the DMCCA?

Customers increasingly expect to understand what they’re paying for, when they’ll be charged, and how they can leave. The DMCCA aims to help with these changes:

Key terms shown separately before purchase. Show auto-renewal, how often customers pay, minimum commitment, price changes, reminders, and how to cancel clearly and apart from your general terms. Customers must confirm they understand that ordering means they have to pay.

Reminders before renewal. Remind customers before each renewal — with the date, the amount, and how to cancel — and give them enough time to act. Extra rules apply when a trial converts to paid and when a renewal commits the customer for 12 months or more.

A new cooling-off period at renewal. Customers get a new 14-day window to cancel without penalty after a trial ends and on renewals of 12 months or more. A separate notice must go out at the start of each window.

Easy cancellation. If customers signed up online, they must be able to cancel online and switch off auto-renewal at any time before the next renewal.

If these steps are missed, customers may be able to cancel and get a refund. Secondary legislation and CMA guidance will set out the detail.

Why Renewal Moments Matter More Than Acquisition

A subscription renewal is more than just a billing moment. It becomes the moment a customer decides whether your service is valuable enough to continue.

And this decision gets shaped long before that deadline. It reflects whether customers have adopted the product, seen meaningful outcomes, received useful support, and understood what they are paying for. For subscription businesses, that makes renewal one of the clearest signals of customer trust.

The strongest renewal experiences help customers make an informed decision rather than forcing a rushed one. A simple value recap can be especially useful for annual subscribers: what they’ve used, saved, and achieved, as well as which features have become part of their routine. The goal isn’t to manufacture urgency, but rather to make the value of continuing visible.

This also creates an opportunity to act earlier with customers who may be drifting. Falling usage, low trial activity, and disengagement are signals that a customer may need education, onboarding, or help realizing value — not simply another promotional message at the point of renewal.

Recurly’s latest analysis of 76 million subscribers across 2,200 merchants found that subscriber acquisition rates have stabilised at around 3%, while overall subscription growth has slowed to 12.6%. In a more mature market, growth depends less on simply adding subscribers and more on earning the right to keep them.

The economics reinforce that shift. Bain’s long-standing research found that a 5% increase in retention can raise profits by 25% to 95% because the cost to serve loyal customers can fall over time while the value of their relationship grows. And in subscription businesses specifically, former subscribers now drive nearly one in four new sign-ups, according to Recurly. Additionally, across 20,000 brands, Recharge found that subscribers placed nearly three times more orders than one-time shoppers — another reason the post-conversion customer relationship deserves as much attention as the initial sale.

Winning a subscriber is only the first step. The real growth opportunity lies in helping customers continue to see value, giving them control over their choices, and creating the kind of renewal experience that makes staying — or returning — feel worthwhile.

Being Transparent at Renewal Isn’t the Opposite of Retention

For too long, subscription retention has been confused with making cancellation difficult. But a customer who stays because the exit is unclear is not necessarily a loyal customer. They may be a future support ticket, refund request, or detractor.

According to The Harris Poll UK, 53% of respondents said that they’d be unlikely to return after a hard cancellation, and 30% say automatic renewal contributed to their difficulty cancelling.

Trustworthy retention works differently. It gives customers clarity on their plan, timing, and options — and then gives them a reason to remain. That can mean making it easy to pause, switch to a more appropriate plan, or get help before cancelling. The choice must remain real.

This approach calls for a change in mindset: retention isn’t about preventing every cancellation. It’s about helping the right customers stay because the service continues to be valuable, while letting others leave with confidence and respect.

The same principle should shape communication frequency. A highly engaged customer may welcome useful updates and renewal context, while a disengaged customer may need fewer, more relevant messages. Respecting preferences, timing, and quiet periods is part of a customer-first retention strategy.

What a Better Renewal Strategy Could Look Like

A good renewal experience is easy to recognize because it feels straightforward.

Customers can quickly understand what’s changing, when it’s happening, and what choices they have. The information they receive matches their actual plan and relationship with the business, is accessible in the channels they use, and important messages don’t disappear simply because they were offline when a notification arrived.

The experience should also work at the moments that matter most:

A trial customer needs clear support as they decide whether to continue

A monthly subscriber may need a lightweight, consistent experience

An annual subscriber may benefit from a more meaningful value recap before their next commitment

A customer considering cancellation should be able to complete it without friction, while being offered genuinely useful alternatives, such as pausing or moving to a lower-tier plan

When a customer does leave, the journey should still be valuable. A simple confirmation builds confidence that their request was actually handled. An optional exit survey can help the business understand whether the issue was price, product fit, onboarding, support, or something else. That feedback can then shape future product, pricing, and customer-success decisions.

The standard is simple: even a customer who leaves should feel they were treated fairly.

Driving Renewals With Bloomreach

Bloomreach is your key to creating a renewal strategy that works.

Ana Luisa uses Bloomreach to support its AL Luxe monthly membership journey, from welcome flows and renewal alerts to reminders about members’ available credit.
